statistics, probability, odds against, rolling pair of dice, drawing balls with and without replacement?
My teacher gave the answers, but I have no clue how he came up with them...I got different answers by fallowing the book.
III.Find the odds against getting a 7 or 11 when rolling a pair of dice.
III.28 to 8, or 7 : 2
VI A bag contains 5 red balls, 3 yellow balls, and 2 blue balls Draw twice Find the probability that
a)first one is red and second one is blue, with replacement.
b)first one is red and second one is not red without replacement.
VI. a. 1/9 b. ¼
please help...I am about to give up...the numbers dont make sense why those are the answers.
Well, I can explain how I'd approach those problems, hopefully that will give you some kind of understanding =D
Firstly don't feel too bad, I find probabilities are a sea of badly written or unclear questions a lot of the time ^^
III. This question is asking you what the chances are of obtaining a total of 7 or 11 if you roll a pair of fair dice once.
First of all think about how many different outcomes you can obtain, since both dice have numbers 1-6 on their faces, we must have a total of 6*6 = 36 possible outcomes. (1 1, 1 2, 1, 3, 1 4, 1 5,1 6, 2 1.......etc etc).
Now we need to find out how many of those combinations provide us with a total of 7 or 11. Assuming that the dice are not interchangable then to get 7 we can have
Die a ,Die b
3 ,4
4 ,3
1 ,6
6 ,1
2 ,5
5 ,2
and for 11, we just have
Die a ,Die b
5 ,6
6 ,5
If we add all those up, we get 6+2 = 8 different ways of making 7 and 11.
So finally to answer the question =D
When we roll the dice, we will get one of 36 different outcomes, 8 of those outcomes will give us a total of 7 or 11.
That means the rest of the time we will NOT get a total of 7 or 11 (36-8 = 28)
So the odds AGAINST getting a total of 7 or 11 are 28:8 (28 ways of not getting 7 or 11 vs 8 ways of getting 7 or 11)
Although you shouldn't really express probabilities in terms of ratios ^^
