Information About Car Tyres - Part One
The choice of tyre for your vehicle is an important consideration.. Remember that it is only via these four pieces of rubber that your contact with the road is made. It makes sense, then, to understand at least a little about the importance of having the correct tyres fitted to your vehicle, as well as what some of the more common terms used when talking about car tyres are. There is no end to what experienced tyre-fitters could tell you about tyres. Remembering that having your wheels re-aligned is also very important, any main dealer service centre will be happy to do. More articles about tyres will follow this first one.
Huge variations exist in the compound used, the manufacturing process and the amount of testing done on the different types of tyre available to the motorist. Since cars differ so much in their performance there is an equally wide range of tyres. Hence the amount of choice you have when replacing your car's tyres can often seem bewildering. Some of the types of tyre available are listed below.
Belted/Radial Tyres
The old-fashioned cross-ply tyre has now been almost completely replaced by the radial or belted type. The radial tyre's inner casing is made of materials which are vertical in relation to the direction of travel. The designation 'radial' comes from the fact that a side view of the materials reveals a radial pattern. The only problem associated with the composition of this type of tyre is that the materials cannot absorb the lateral force when cornering or accelerating. Steel belts are often incorporated in the material so that this disadvantage is removed. Rubber surrounding ropes of steel wire constitute these steel belts. They give structural rigidity and maintain the tread flat in contact with the road. However fast the car is driven the tyre is firmly held against the wheel's rim by the addition of stretch-proof bead-wires that reinforce the exceptionally strong steel wires.
Run Flat Tyres
Manufacturers have now developed tyres and systems that allow a vehicle to continue moving despite there being a loss of pressure in the tyres. There are two systems available - reinforced tyre sidewall types, and those which use a rubber clip attached to the rim. A run flat tyre has to work in conjunction with the car's tyre pressure warning system. The replacement of run flat tyres has to be carried out with due care.
Summer Tyres
Excellent braking and acceleration are guaranteed with these tyres in all seasons and weathers provided the temperature is above freezing. Summer tyres typically perform well in warm weather and are not suitable for cold driving conditions. The tyre has a simple block shaped tread which has the effect of maintaining a firm grip on the road surface at all times.
Winter Tyres/Cold Weather Condition Tyres
For cold, icy or snowy conditions these tyres cannot be beaten. There are deep grooves set in blocks on the tread of these tyres. The need for a greater grip on slippery roads is provided by this design. The tread rubber gives excellent friction and allows flexibility at low temperatures. The main objective of current designs is to provide the driver with good control and safe braking.
All-Season Tyres
As their name suggests, these are designed for use all-year round, and are more complex than other tyres. This extra complexity is because they incorporate the longer block-edges that are used on winter tyres. More blades or grooves are apparent in these tyres to ensure improved braking and driving performance, produced by maximising the effect of its edge. In all road conditions these All-season tyre tread designs deliver superlative traction, low noise and even wear.
Snow tyres
The design of these tyres is such that they are ideal for driving in snowy conditions. Their design is such that by replacing standard tyres at the onset of winter your car's handling will be much easier on ice and snow. The type of rubber used prevents any loss of elasticity whilst the deeper tread ensures effective traction. The deeper treads also work to displace higher volumes of snow, sleet and ice than a tyre would do with fewer and more shallow treads. In muddy or icy conditions these tyres out-perform other types.
4WD Tyres
4WD (four wheel drive) tyres are produced for high performance on 4x4 vehicles. As the name suggests, they are also designed for off-road driving. Four wheel drive is not an uncommon feature of vehicles today. It is no longer the sole domain of the bigger vehicles as many modern saloon cars also have four wheel drive systems which can be engaged either permanently or can be engaged and disengaged as dictated by driving conditions.
Rolling Resistance
Your car's fuel economy can be affected by the rolling resistance of your tyres. The pressure in your tyres will have a bearing on both fuel economy and performance. This is why you will see tyres such as "eco", "fuel savers" or "energy" tyres. Such tyres will probably have low rolling resistance. A car fitted with narrow tyres will usually use less fuel and be less prone to aquaplaning.
Tyre Pressures
Always check that your car has the correct tyre pressure. You will find the recommended pressure for your car either in the handbook, the glove box or the inside of the driver door panel. Don't allow more than two weeks between tyre pressure checks. An accurate reading can only be taken when the tyres are still cold - air in the tyres will expand when hot which will give you a false reading.
Tyre Care Reminder
Safety, economy and environmental considerations are all influenced by your tyre pressures. So check that all your tyres are at the correct pressures, every couple of weeks. These checks should include your spare as well.
Check for tyre damage at the same time as you check the pressures. Any cuts, lumps and bumps, scrapes or kerbing damage could result in tyre failure, so if you are in any way unsure, get it checked immediately. A flat area could result from sudden braking or uneven wear from your wheels being mis-aligned. If your car has undergone heavy braking, you should have its tyres checked. This goes for commercial vehicles too, lots of dealers do commercial servicing and would be happy to check tyre pressure and alignment.
Remember that it is illegal to have tyres with a tread below the limit of 1.6mm - you will be at greater risk of skidding, aquaplaning and other tyre related catastrophes such as a blow out. So ensure that you regularly inspect the tread and general condition of your wheels. If you are unsure maybe take your car to a main dealer service centre who will be happy to advise you on all types of tyres.
