I drove my car this weekend with a lot of weight and...?
Hi, I have a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis and me and 5 other people (a total of 6) rode along with me i the car, the trip was a total of 250 miles (round trip), all of the people came close to about 1,080 pounds. And we had luggage of about (125) pounds in the trunk. It says that my cargo weight limit is 200 pounds, and my persons weight limit is 1,100 pounds. Is my car okay? Did i strain my engine? How can I tell if i strained it? What's the worst that could happen? Please help, for I'm concerned.
You're car should be fine. The way you can tell if you were in the act of straining, was to notice your engine speed, or RPMs. If you were driving with the engine reving at a higher speed, that may have decreased your gas mileage, but it didn't strain anything. The one thing you may want to be careful with is your transmission, if your car was constantly shifting while you were driving, there was a lot of friction building up in there. Check your transmission fluid and note the color and smell, if it is pink and does not smell burnt you are in the clear, if has changed color or smells bad, get it replaced, or at least checked by a professional. So, the worst that could have happened to your car would be the tranny was a little overworked, but as long as you did not floor the gas pedal everywhere and you weren't trying to ascend any mountains a great speeds, your car should be happy to have served you and your posse well.
