I am going to be travelling overseas and have a question about $$$...?
I will be 17 and I am going to be going to go to Malta, Sicily, Italy, and France in July. I traveled to Australia two years ago with cash & travelers cheques. However, I wasn't able to get some of the stuff I wanted (such as a digeridoo) because I didn't have enough foreign currency. I don't want that to happen this time and want to have either a debit or credit card to go with me. My parents are paying for this (I am very grateful to them) and don't want to have to call them for problems. Which is easier and safer (I will have it in a neck pouch under my shirt) in the area I am traveling to and when should I go about getting them?
I would use a debit card, because it can double as an ATM, should you need local currency. Also, by buying via debit/credit card you typically get a better exchange rate on your purchases, as the currency transaction is done through the credit card company (who makes money via a % of the purchase) as opposed to a currency exchange location which makes money exchanging money.
I would not travel with traveler's checks, and would take an ATM card instead.
You can probably set it up with your parents so that they put money into the your checking account for you - so you can access it and spend it via debit card.
The negative to the debit card is that you can only spend what is in the account, while a credit card would allow you to buy what you want without the need to ensure that you're exactly on your budget or if your parents can't make it to deposit money into your account.
So I guess my answer is to bring both. Credit card for purchases and debit card (for your own checking account) to access money at ATMs.
As for when you should get them, ASAP to ensure that you don't have any problems should there be a delay.
