Tipping question - when / how-much ?
a) Should you tip on arrival at a hotel (if your luggage is carried to the room)?
b) Should you tip everytime someone delivers room-service?
c) Should you tip when leaving the hotel?
d) Should you tip the complimentary hotel taxi that picked you up from the hotel?
And how much?
In many countries, there is no concept of tipping. For example in Japan.
Here is the custom in America:
a) On arrival, tip the bellman $1 to $2 per bag when he brings your luggage to your room. In big cities and expensive resorts, tip on the high side. You do not have to give the doorman anything if all he does is open the door for you.
b) Room service charges are usually added to the bill, but the waiters are required to pool this money and divide it among themselves. To express appreciation for extra good service, tip a few dollars extra in cash, which the waiter gets to keep.
c) Give the doorman $1-$2 if he handles your baggage or holds an umbrella over you. Give the same tip if he calls you a taxi. You can tip him on the spot or you can wait and give him a larger tip when you leave the hotel.
d) If you used the concierge for a special service such as ordering theatre tickets, it is customary to offer a tip of about $2-5. For simple directions or restaurant recommendations, tipping is not necessary.
e) Yes, the driver of the taxi or shuttle would appreciate a tip. $1-2 per person or $4-5 per party is the standard.
One more thing: Don't forget the person who cleaned your room. $1 or $2 per person per day is standard. Leave a tip every day that you stay at the hotel rather than waiting until checkout. That's because the same person may not clean your room every day. Make sure to leave a note with the cash or put it in a sealed envelope with "for the maid" written on it so that the room cleaner knows it is a tip. They are not allowed to touch any cash that they see unless it is clearly designated as a tip.
