what type of substrate do you have to use for leopard geckos, bearded dragons and royal pythons??
i need to know what type of substrate is used for leopard geckos, bearded dragons and royal pythons as i need to do an exotics assignment where that information is needed. if anyone has a leopard gecko, or just knows what substrate is needed, please let me know.
For the royal I would use newspaper as well. Removing them from their cage before feeding is very risky business..here's why
1.) You run the risk that you might smell like the food item if you were thawing it out. Thus when you reach your hand in the cage the snake will go for your hand thinking its food.
2.) After you have fed your snake you have to put it back in its cage. This alone poses two problems
a.) The snake just ate and usually after they eat they are still in "food mode" and will still be looking for more food. Your hand is nice and warm. They will often strike first and ask questions later when they are in this food mode.
b.) If your snake allows you to pick it up after feeding (many snakes will), there is a chance that the handling will make your snake throw up its meal. Its very stressful on the snake and it also wastes a meal.
Newspaper has its benefits
1.) Easy to clean- roll it up, throw it away
2.) East to see if the snake defecated- With cypress you can see when he poops, but often the wood will absorb the urine and you won't be able to tell when its soiled. WHen you can't see if its gets soiled you run the risk of building up the bacteria in your snakes cage.
3.) No real risk of ingestion- you can feed your snake in the cage and avoid what I mentioned above when it comes to removing the snake from the cage.
4.) Its recycling- instead of throwing away the sunday paper you can use it in your snakes cage.
Although it isnt the prettiest thing to look at (a cage with newspaper) it is the cleanest and most cost efficient substrate you can use
As far as leopard geckos are concerned Astroturf cut to the size of the bottom of the cage is pretty amazing.
1) Easy to clean- You can pull it out spray it with a hose, dry it, and your good to go. What works even better is if you have two pieces of it. That way you can replace the piece with a clean dry one right away while the other is air drying. You can also spot clean these (remove the feces by hand/spoon/whatever) a few times before you really need to clean it.
2.) Cheap- Again, this is really cheap compared to going out and buying commercially made reptile bedding.
3.) Can't ingest it- with all substrates (calcium sand included) you run the risk of ingestion and eventually impaction. I've seen lizards die from eating too much calcium sand and other similar subsrates. This is especially true for babies. If you want a more aesthically appealing substrate like that sand that someone mentioned earlier that they can bury in, wait until they are adults and place them on it then.
For Bearded Dragons I would go with the same recommendation as with the leopard geckos, especially for babies. The babies (as well as adults) are all clumsy eaters and will just dive and smash after insects and they will take in a bit of the substrate with their food.
Well, thats my 2 cents worth. I hope I helped out a bit. Melissa Kaplains site is good with good caresheets, but I think she is too arrogant and that she comes off like "I'm the only one that can keep reptiles..blah blah blah". Either way, check out her website if you think that could help too.
