How can I prevent myself from becoming overwhelmed while planning a trip?
I recently made a post stating that I am going to be a first time flyer and I'm pretty much going to be on my own. I'm going to be staying 2-3 weeks in the Virgin Islands, St. Croix, while visiting my boyfriend 
*Super excited!!* However, I just feel so weirded out about the airport setups, their sercurity processes, and how the hell am I going to pack all my shampoos, conditioners, and lotions into 3 oz bottles? lol I need some insight on what actually goes on, if it's as comfortable a setting as everyone claims, and how do I go about packing enough but still packing light?
Oh and what are the rules with carry-on bags and the amount of luggage you wish to have? And the chances of luggage getting stolen :/
Tape a card inside of your suitcase with your name, phone # and address of home and where you will be in St. Croix. That way if your luggage tags fall off on the outside they can always find it on the inside. I always have 2 name tags on the outside.......1 from the luggage store and 1 from the airline.
For a 2 to 3 week vacation. I would only take my make-up and expensive facial stuff.......if it is in large containers.....put it in smaller travel containers.......you can pick them up at a dollar store. For my hair stuff, razors, deodorant, toothpaste, sun protection, etc.....I purchase travel size when I get there. Hotels and friends have hair dryers...........and irons.
All of my medication and sample over the counter drugs...go in a zip lock bag.
Most airlines are charging this summer for checked in baggage, from $15 to $25 a bag......You might choose to pay this extra fee each way........I certainly wouldn't.
.For carry on........you are allowed 1-carry on luggage and 1 of either a purse, laptop, brief case or back pack. I put my empty purse into my carry on and I put my laptop in its carryon case into my netted back pack.........I put my wallet and cell into a zip lock and put it in the back pack. Camera and sunglasses go in the back pack.
You will just have to do laundry or send to the dry cleaners your clothes.........you need to pack the minimal. 2-tops, 2-shorts or clam diggers, 1-dress for casual or evening. Wear a pair of dress pants on the plane. 2 pairs underwear....1 extra bra.....I lightly use shampoo and conditioner and hand wash my clothes daily.......I either hang them up or go to the hotel dryer if I am in a hurry.
Good walking shoes that you can wear for dress or casual and wear these on the plane.......1 pair of beach shoes..and 1 pair sandals.
Remember you have to leave room for souveneers too.....and the neat clothes you want to buy there too.
Luggage rarely gets totally lost or stolen.........if you have taken the preventive measures in putting your name taped on the inside. It might get onto another flight if your flights are delayed and then they deliver it to where you are staying once int has caught up to where you are. This is rare though.
As for security.......you have to open your laptop and camera.and give that to security. Your carry on, back pack, and the shoes you are wearing all go through on a conveyor belt in tubs..which are x-rayed.....if there is anything suspicious looking they just have you open it up and show them.....
Anything in your pockets, belts and heavy jewelry and watches go in a small tray and pass to security guard.....Nothing is left on you except your clothes, when walking through.......Better safe then sorry.........so I don't mind.
It is so quick to go through security......give yourself at least an extra 1/2 hour to go through security if you aren't use to it......so you don't get all nervous........and it is really fun to sit there and people watch........if you have extra time....
I fly frequently and other half flys several times a week.
