New passport/credit card holder protects against identity theft
An inexpensive new pocket size leather carrying case is designed to hold passports and credit or debit cards embedded with RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) chips. A special lining prevents unauthorized RFID readers from accessing personal identity and account information stored on the chips.
"All newly issued U.S. Passports are required to have RFID chips containing the same information printed on the paper Passport, as well as a digital picture of the owner," explains Joanne Streeter, owner and CEO of Morton's Marketing Resources, a Long Valley based, WBE (Women's Business Enterprise) Certified supplier of gift and promotional items. "Although the chips are designed to expedite the process of checking passports, hackers have unfortunately learned to access the information they contain from as far as 10 feet away, leaving the owner completely unaware that his or her identity has just been stolen."
Many new credit and debit cards also contain RFID chips and the account information they contain is equally vulnerable to theft by remote access. "Consumers love these cards because they can be used simply by tapping them against an RFID reader on a gasoline pump or at a fast food restaurant," says Streeter. "Most people, however, are unaware just how vulnerable the cards are to remote identity theft."
The attractive Secure Tech leather cases are available in two sizes. "The smaller size holds a Passport and one or two smaller items," says Streeter. "The larger one has extra pockets for credit cards, airline tickets and other pocket size documents. Both have the special RFID-impervious lining. For a slight additional charge, either size can have a company name or logo impressed on the cover for use as a promotional item."
