This is a complex question that requires more than a simple yes or no.
The timeliness of your payments accounts for 35% of your FICO score. Utilizing less than 30% of your total available credit helps, too.
So to answer your question, as long as you are making your payments on time and keeping your balance under 30% of total credit, each factor will work together in boosting your credit score and keeping it high.
Paying interest doesn't matter to FICO, however banks love to see it because they are making money off of you. My credit card issuer didn't make any interest money off of me because I paid my balance in full every month. They "rewarded" me by instituting an annual membership fee. A couple of my friends with the same card (Citi Platinum Rewards) who carried balances, albeit small balances, did not have this annual fee applied to their accounts, so you can draw your own conclusions from that. Credit card APRs are higher than merchant transaction fees and they look at the bottom line to see how financially advantageous it is to keep you as a customer. Lots of banks are now instituting membership fees, inactivity fees, increased transaction fees and other fees on accounts that aren't money makers for them, or slashing credit limits and even closing accounts outright.
However it is a complete and total myth that paying off in full every month boosts a FICO score as long as, again, you aren't using too much of your available credit. Paying off in full every month does help save you money though as you're not paying that extra interest fee to the bank. Again, however, don't be surprised if eventually, you are punished in some way for that sound fiscal behavior.
