Strong Thin Wallet
Is there any material that is as light and strong as carbon fiber panels but less expensive?

I've been working with carbon fiber panels (thin sheets) but the cost is killing me. I am looking for a cost effective material that is similar to work with as carbon fiber (light, strong, etc) without the heavy hit to the wallet. Does anyone know of any such material and where I can get some? Thanks...

Both steel and aluminum are heavy.
Fiberglass is the next best thing.

What I have done is make a composite.
I put fiberglass over wood (plywood),
then added a final thin layer of carbon fiber
on both sides on the outside layer.

The inside does not need too much strength.
Save the strongest stuff (carbon fiber) for the outside.
I can stand on this composite, which I used
for the centerboard of my snipe sailboat.
