Fingerprinting car drivers?

The UK is becoming a police state, but the idea of fingerprinting drivers when they are stopped by the police seems over the top. If the UK had ID cards, then all this nonsense would stop. Next thin you'll have is that the police can take a cheek-swab from anyone they care to stop on the street, for DNA records. Isn't the ID card a better option.

I'm not against fingerprinting - I just think it would be much easier to introduce an ID card - with finger prints, which people in the UK had to carry with them. As far as I can see there is still a lot of hoo-ha about infringement of provace regarding ID cards.
That should be privacy. - It's getting late where I am.
Is there anybody out there who can read? I'm all for ID cards. I just don't understand why most of the people who answered are fpr fingerprinting whilst there is strong resistence to ID cards. I have an ID card and I had one in Hong Kong. No problem.

Why do we have to have either? We have a totalitarian government. ID cards will not solve terrorism. And the potential for bureaucratic cock-ups is immense.
