Where can I find high quality waterproof ski pants?
I'm going to be camping in the rocky mountains quite a lot this winter, so I need some high quality waterproof ski pants. I can spend anywhere from $50 to $200 on these pants, so don't be afraid to name some top notch brands. Here are some specs I'm looking for:
1) Belt loops
2) Pockets (doesn't need to be cargo style pants)
3) Tough material to be somewhat tear resistant
4) Waterproof (gore tex or similar)
5) I'll have base layers on, but it would be nice if the pants had a bit of insulation as well.
6) Must be available in subtle colors like olive drab, black, tan, brown, etc. No flashy colors like neon green please!
Please provide product links or the names of the product.
Mike, I couldn't have asked for a better answer, thanks so much! Now comes the tricky part... finding some ski pants in my size in the middle of summer...
Well depends where you live on the store but examples of products would be:
Columbia pants- pretty much any style that you like, almost all of them have belt loops, pockets, and have proven to be very durable, they use a waterproof system called Omni-tech which is their version of Gore-tex. Gore-tex is only one way to waterproof things and companies that do not use it only don't because they don't want to pay Gore-tex to use a product they can use themselves. Omni-tech is incredibly good waterproofing system. As you move up in price the pants will become a little more insulated and the higher end pants will be fully seam sealed vs. critically seam sealed at lower prices. Critically means major seams have tape underneath them to seal them off from water, fully means all seams will. Also as you move up in price they will have a high waterproof/breath ability rating, the highest is usually 20000mm waterproof/ 200000 breath ability.
Helly Hansen Legend Pants- I have these in black. All Helly products are fully seam sealed and they do not rate their products however all their products are between 10k/10k and 20k/20k. They guarantee their waterproofing for LIFE as long as it is shown you have taken care of them and you haven't ripped them therefore making them not waterproof. Helly also does not use Gore-tex just again for the simple idea of why pay for something you can make cheaper yourself. I am a huge believer in Helly stuff, I have pants and top base layer and I bought my girlfriend Helly jacket and pants and neither of us have ever been wet on the mountain and we get a lot of wet snow here. Oh and Helly Hansen sometimes attaches a buy one get one free lift ticket to quite a few resorts on their products so thathat'sout $50 off the pants right there.
These are my two top brands, pretty much anything in Helly Hansen or Columbia would be great, they are in my opinion the two best brands out there in outter wear and you will be getting great value for your money in those two brands. Best of luck choosing and staying dry.
